4 Tips for Postpartum Hair Loss

What is it?

It usually happens around the third to fifth month after your baby is born. Your hormones start to regulate, your body is adapting back to its previous levels, and your hair is falling out.

It’s perfectly normal but that doesn’t make it any easier. I was so used to long luscious hair during pregnancy. Then all of the sudden it felt like I was losing so much hair. It felt like another thing to google late at night followed by a “is this normal??”.

Four tips I share with new moms as they enter this phase:

  1. Don’t skimp on the water. It is an absolute must during postpartum and especially if you’re nursing/pumping. This is the water bottle I’ve used and love because it’s not plastic and it won’t shatter if I drop it on the ground.
  1. Try to eat as nutritious as possible but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t; my secret go-to? Always snack on nuts! They’re so good for us and filled with all the nutrients we need. I used this book, The First Forty Days, to help prep my meals for the first forty days postpartum. I also asked my friends to make me some meals from it.
  1. Be gentle with your body and your hair. Your body is healing! You just had a baby!! It will take time and lots of self-love. I found Prose and began to use it after I realized how much hair loss I had. I had a visible bald spot on my head and I decided it was time. You can use this link for 15% off any purchases.
They ask you a list of questions to formulate the perfect shampoo/conditioner that suits you needs and your lifestyle. It’s also formulated based on your zip code in case you have extra pollutants where you live.
  1. Get restful sleep. Telling a new mom to find time to sleep feels silly because we all know how hard that is. What I can encourage you to do is to have restful sleep when possible. Harper slept in my room as a newborn and therefore the white noise helped me sleep as well. Having her in the room also helped prevent me from scrolling on my phone in bed and lying awake.

I’m 2 years postpartum now and my hair is finally back to where it was before pregnancy. It’s a learning curve and our bodies will reset but the in-between is hard enough. I hope these small tips help you.
