Favorite Eco-Friendly Items

Environmentally friendly products in our HOME.

There’s a lot that goes on when you’re pregnant. Both emotionally, physically, and mentally you start to shift. You start to realize that it’s no longer just you but it’s you + a little! One of the switches I made during pregnancy was to begin to introduce healthier options in our home, so let’s chat about my favorite eco-friendly items.

As time goes on you also realize that your small bump continues to grow and your friend who had a baby “last year” now has a four-year-old. Time goes by really fast when you become a parent and you can’t catch up. So, you find ways to slooooow down in the midst of the chaos (more on that in other posts).

But for me, I realized I had to do my absolute best to try to keep Mother Nature healthy and thriving for when my daughter would be my age. I started to really focus on small things like recycling, choosing products that had less packaging, and unplugging items I wasn’t using at home.

Eventually that continued to evolve to where I started to make more intentional purchases when possible. Every product I buy does not give back to the environment, is a green product, or helps the environment, but I try to find small changes and continue to do so daily.

Are you at a loss on how to start or how to continue to help?

Below are 10 easy changes I made in our home in the past 3 years.

  1. Stasher Reusable Storage Bag – I started using these REUSABLE bags for lunches at work. No more plastic ziplocks over here for my almond stash! They’re easy to wash in the dishwasher and durable! Harper uses them for her snacks now.
  2. Pact Non-toxic Bed Sheets – When it was time to buy new sheets for my bed I opted for PACT sheets. They’re organic and use 81% LESS water than conventional cotton. Plus, they’re Fair Trade!
  3. Composting – I initially began composting at home with the Oxo Compost Bin which consists of a simple plastic bin with compostable bags! Then I stepped up my composting game with the first ever counter top AT HOME COMPOSTER by Lomi. The design is lovely and their mission is unmatched.
  4. BON AMI Chemical Free Kitchen and Bath Cleaner – I started using BON AMI cleaner to scrub my showers and bathrooms. It’s chemical free & the packaging is from recycled materials. It may not feel like a big impact but I know that the less chemicals we’re spraying in our air the better EVERYONE’S air is and the better my body feels too.
  5. PACT Leggings – Why stop on the sheets for more sustainable cotton? I ordered PACT leggings once my other ones tore. It was my first pair and I love them so far. They’re comfortable and TTS.
  6. Recycle Recycle Recycle! – Before I throw ANTYTHING away, I look the items up in TerraCycle’s online website to see if I can recycle the items somewhere instead. They have lots of drop off locations and you can also create your own!
  7. Bamboo Eco-Friendly Diapers – Harper used cloth diapers as a baby, however we always kept disposables on hand in case of any emergency (HELLOOO frozen pipes from the 2021 Winter Storm). These are the ones I signed up for because they’re bamboo and eco-friendly. They’re also delicately beautiful.
  8. Cloth Diapers – Curious about cloth diapering? This was a big move for us but I couldn’t imagine tossing all those diapers. Click here to view our cloth diaper storefront, which includes the items we used.
  9. Force of Nature Non-toxic Disinfectant Cleaner – My absolute favorite way to reduce plastic was to start to use a cleaner that didn’t require me to buy a new bottle every time, plus it’s non-toxic! We use Force of Nature (code HARPS10) and now it’s also Harper’s favorite “science experiment” whenever I have to make a new mix of cleaner (click here for related article)!
  10. Bedroom Renovation – I updated both my mattress and my bedframe for cleaner, eco-friendly options and I love them. When it was time for a new mattress, I was so excited to get an Avocado Mattress. Not only is my back in heaven, but it’s also one of the world’s most sustainable brands. Their goal is to become the world’s first zero-waste mattress factory. They have KIDS mattresses TOO! For our bedframe we switched to The Afton, by Savvy Rest. We added on the floating bedside tables. From the moment they arrived I was so thankful to know they use zero VOC stains and it was the perfect addition to our home.

Still curious on how else to help? QUICK TIPS BELOW.

  • Turn off lights
  • Unplug unused items
  • Take the stairs
  • Drive less (Carpool if possible!)
  • More showers less baths
  • Buy native plants
  • Buy second hand clothing. Seriously though this one is a no brainer with kids. I try to find all winter clothes for Harper at second hand stores. It’s usually only worn a handful of times.
